Where Is My Mind?: Four Artists Who Are Clinically Insane
Daniel Johnston
Before being covered by a cavalcade of artists, Daniel Johnston was just a songwriter who spent some time in a mental institution. Though finally being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Johnston went through some tough times with his mental stability, as documented in the film “The Devil and Daniel Johnston.” He currently resides in Texas and performs occasionally.
Jim Gordon
The drummer for the Eric Clapton vehicle Derek and the Dominos who was best know for penning the piano coda at the end of “Layla,” suffered end from fairly severe schizophrenia. Gordon said he heard voices in his head, mainly of his mother, who he ended up murdering in June of 1983. After the trial and a proper diagnosis, he was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison of which he is currently serving.
Brian Wilson
Probably the most famous musician on the list, Brian Wilson was one of the minds behind the Beach Boys who was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type, which is a combination of both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Wilson has recently been said to be affected by the long-term use of anti-psychotic drugs (and probably also LSD) which leaves him seeming slow and “brain fried.”
Charles Manson
Somewhat related to Brian Wilson (or Dennis Wilson rather) Manson was never diagnosed with anything, but there is still reason to believe he is clinically insane. Manson was convicted of orchistrating and taking part in the murders of a number of individuals, which some claim may have been linked to his failed music career. Take a listen to the derranged singer/songwriter and try to imagine the fame that may have been bestowed upon him (and how he remotely resembles Devendra Banhart).
